running conflicts for a defense firm

Kathy Grover (Customer) asked a question.

running conflicts for a defense firm

We are a defense firm and have just recently started using Leap. We need an effective way to run conflicts of party name in the lawsuits. We can't use cards because those just contain our adjusters and insurance companies who retain us and searching all docs in our matters is way too large. Anyone been able to find a work around for this?

Thank you for reaching out to us. The Conflict search is designed only to be run from cards.

    Thank you,

Help Desk - clearly I have been told this by "help" people with Leap. It is becoming increasingly obvious Leap is not designed for insurance defense firms. Clearly this is a huge issue for us which is why I posted to see what other defense firms may have done for a work around

      • Same issue we have. We had to bring in all the players in our files as cards AND make sure they appeared as table data in whatever matter they belong (and did NOT appear as table data for "clients," because that royally screws up Reporting). They're also often added redundantly for their multiple roles (Insured is also usually Defendant - let me tell you what a peach that is for some of our major mass torts). And the Cards are not in any way designed for the kind of information we'd like to see at a glance from them - we have to navigate to Notes/Other to determine whether they're policy holder, insured driver, NPU, etc.

And don't even get me started on the absurdity of the Cards vs. People relationship. We created Cards for all our carriers, then added the individual adjusters as Staff - so as to make use of the Add function. Problem is, that's a "People" relationship, and doesn't show up on that adjuster's actual Card. You have to go into View People to find them, and then when you look at their matters, it gives you every matter that the CARRIER is associated with. Which is 100% useless. And then for insult to injury, when you select New Email it gives you a list of EVERY SINGLE ADJUSTER that's Staffed to the Carrier's card (not to mention every OC, expert, insured, etc) - as opposed to the one that's Added to the Client. (We got around that big ignoring New Email, and started right-clicking the adjusters name instead.)

And to date, nobody had been able to tell me the functional difference between designating a Card as a "Business/Partnership" vs a "Company" as it relates to matters, reporting, or any other feature of Leap.

It's absolutely bonkers the way these Cards/People are designed (like Leap's first clients were immigration, family, real estate and BK firms, and they left no versatility beyond that). It's very counterproductive to insurance defense litigation.

I think a solution Leap could offer is to allow us to create Card templates, the same way we can do Matter templates. Nobody in our line of work cares about Claimant John Smith's relationship status, country of birth, passport number or eye color. But you know what we do care about? His middle name, prior addresses, which vehicle position he was in, etc.

And for pete's sake, unlock the DOB from requiring a full date. I can't tell you how many times I've had to shove their birth year into Place of Birth because that's all a redacted police report gives me.

Suffice to say, not a fan of the Cards. And especially not a fan of splitting them into Cards and People.

Good Luck getting any assistance from Leap. Their answer was “there is no way other than opening a “card” for every individual”. Our work around was to create a shell matter in Leap called Conflicts. We create a Word doc that contains all of the names associated with that case, then search only that matter for conflicts. Its is not ideal because for some reason it doesn’t always work and Leap help desk couldn’t articulate why.

We too are in need of a way to run a conflicts check in LEAP? In previous program we used there was a place to do this and it would give us a report back. We now are unable to print a report showing this information, this has been very disappointing as we no longer have a way to print this report to file to show there are now conflicts. LEAP PLEASE CREATE A REPORT TO DO THIS. THANKS

We type in the style of the case including the names of the parties, claim no., cause no. etc....in the "Matter Type" tab under the DETAILS section on the main page of the matter so we can search the info from the matter page and it will pull up any matters with the information put into the search field. This has been a temporary solution to the problem, but they definitely need to come up with a better permanent solution.

LEAP has to improve their conflict search. Their base customers are Law Firms. How is there no solid conflict search program for this?!
