What is an orphan template?

An orphan template is one that does not have a Parent Matter Type. When a Template is created within a Matter Type, that Matter Type is automatically assigned as the Parent.

When that Matter Type is removed from LEAP, the template no longer has a Parent associated with it, and therefore becomes orphaned and will not show in the original location in LEAP.

Your custom templates created within that Matter Type will also become orphaned. Orphan templates are never “lost” as they can be restored.

To restore an orphan template within LEAP Desktop, we need to relocate it:

Open the matter.
Make sure you're on the Details & Correspondence tab.
Select Forms & Templates > Browse.
Locate the 'Orphan Precedents' folder in the left panel.
Select the folder to open and view the orphan documents.
Move the selected document/s to the new location by right-clicking on the document/s, then select Cut.
Select the desired folder (new location) in the left panel, and right-click and select Paste.

You can also move selected documents from the 'Orphan Precedents' folder by dragging and dropping them into their new location/folder.

If necessary, add your own precedent code and any other details.

After relocating all documents, the orphan precedents folder will automatically be deleted by LEAP.
