Table Types and Fields for Templates

Table Types and Fields for Templates

I'm sure that LEAP can do this, I just can't seem to find the right places to do it. I'm trying to set up templates that already "know" the roles of the parties (e.g., plaintiff/defendant/petitioner/third-party defendant; mother/father; etc.). It seems the information is already in LEAP, but I can't find merge codes to get that info. In edit table types, there is an option for "client" information, but if I try to use that I receive an error that LEAP cannot download that table type. In Word, I can insert legacy fields and there's options for "Family role" and "Party role," but I can't find a way to enter that information into leap to where it will merge. I supposed I could create custom fields, but it seems that there should be a "cleaner" method already built in.

    Hi @Scott Scholl (Customer),

Thank you for posting on LEAP Community Discussions.

To clarify my understanding of this query you are looking for a general "role" field for documents/forms/templates that will populate the role of whoever the document is addressed.

Unfortunately, such a field is not available within LEAP at the moment. Please visit this form here to provide our content teams with feedback directly regarding this.

Let us know if you require further assistance.

    Best regards,

    Sebastian.

An example may be more clear. Often times when drafting pleadings I'll need to refer to the parties by their role in the matter. For example, "Comes Now Plaintiff, John Doe, and for . . . .." and "Plaintiff did this, Defendant did that, Court should order Defendant to do this, etc." If there is a field that can be inserted in the template to determine if Client is the plaintiff or defendant (and whether opposing party is plaintiff, defendant, third-party defendant), you wouldn't need to use a "work-around" or go through the document to change the labels for the different parties.

I did find where the "family role" file comes from. For custody cases LEAP always you to specify in the tables that Client is the father and opposing party is the mother, so while I haven't tried it yet I imagine would allow me to write a template that had fields to display "father" or "mother" of the children as appropriate. That would take care of family roles in those particular cases, but not "plaintiff/defendant" roles and would seem to be a serious limitation because sometimes you have a divorce that involves custody and so you would have to chose between setting up the matter as a custody issue or a divorce issue, because the custody matter type lacks fields relevant to the divorce issues, and the divorce matter type lacks those fields relevant to the custody issues (e.g., divorce doesn't have a field for the parties' roles as "mother" or "father" and custody doesn't have the field for date of marriage, etc.) I tried to create a recurring matter to include fields from both types of matters, but it seems to be an "either/or" situation - meaning either it's a custody case or it's a divorce case." (I've checked the "show all" box for adding fields, but the fields available to be added are still limited to the particular type of matter.

I'll submit a feature request, but if I'm overlooking something any help would be appreciated.

      Hi @Scott Scholl (Customer),

Thank you for the clarification & apologies for any misunderstanding on my part,

Try the following fields within "Editing" > "Insert Fields"

      • "Client" Dropdown > "[Matter] File Name"
      • "Other Side" Dropdown > "[Matter] File Name"

And yes that is correct the "Family role" FIeld corresponds to the "Family Role" table within the matter.

      Regards,

      Sebastian.
